One of Lancashire’s biggest retailers is to offset the job losses caused by the closure of a local Woolworths by opening an outlet in its place.
The Best of Oswaldtwistle Mills will open its doors on Accrington’s Broadway in time for Easter, and will employ 15 people in full and part time jobs.
The original Ossy Mills is credited as being the region’s second most visited tourist attraction, in addition to its image as a vastly popular retail complex.
The new trial store will have a strong focus towards its selective range of women fashion brands but will also consist of local favourites such as Stockleys Sweets and Musbury Fabrics alongside bigger brand names such as Yankee Candles
Boyd Hargreaves, managing director of Oswaldtwistle Mills, said: “We are confident that we can help to support the local community in Accrington, who have lost a major high street retailer.
“Woolworths in Accrington had to close due to wider group issues, but this store seems to have had a reasonable trading performance and is in an excellent location.
“There is a lot of negativity about Accrington at the moment surrounding the empty shops in the town and we hope our introduction will help to revitalise activity.
“There also seems to be some active developments being made by the owners of the Arndale centre and their agents to fill the other empty shops in the scheme.
“Woolworths has presented us with an opportunity which we have been quick to capitalise on. We will do our utmost to provide a good service and add to the prosperity and social cohesion of the town and its surrounding areas,” he added.
Cllr Peter Britcliffe, leader of Hyndburn Council, said: “Anything that brings investment into the area is fantastic news, especially when it’s a local successful company like Oswaldtwistle Mills.
“The outlet will create jobs, will help to improve the town and in turn, will support local residents,” he added.
James Salmon, chief operating officer of Protego, owners of the Arndale Centre said: "We are delighted to have agreed terms with Oswaldtwistle Mills so swiftly after Woolworths' departure."
